Colio Estate 2005 Riesling

It would seem that as of late I am naming my wines something other than what they were named at the winery (see newsletter #39 – Featherstone Onyx). This Colio Riesling is a New York wine … you’ll understand in a few seconds. The first thing that wafted up from the bottle the moment I popped the cork was the smell of apples – a great big appley smell (see where I am going with this?). Pouring the wine into the glass unleashed more apple aromas (of the green variety), along with lemon and some minor floral notes. As the wine warmed, the smells became more predominantly perfumey mingled in with apple-blossom-honey aromas. But hold on, the taste was not as sweet as the nose suggested – cold, it had subdued acids with some bitey apple on the finish – as it warmed, the complexity changed with some wildflower honey and noticeable tart green apple bite on the finish, and the acidity also returned to more mouth-watering levels. This is a pleasant wine that changes drastically with temperature, but consistently remained fun to drink, with Big Apple tastes and smells throughout; and it’s from this description that I get my New York State of Mind; so start spreading the news, I really liked this wine!
